“台独”思潮是关于解决台湾问题的一种政治主张或思想倾向，即谋求将台湾从中国分离出去，成为一个“独立国家”。台独思潮及台独运动是一种非常复杂的社会政治意识及行动，它的产生有着深刻的社会、历史、政治及文化的背景。
“台湾意识”的负面作用被膨胀利用
台湾人民除少数原住高山族各系同胞以外，绝大多数是在清代从福建、广东等地称居来的。他们在台湾不仅遭受残酷的封建压迫，而且还惨遭殖民主义、帝国主义的侵略和掠夺。
自16世纪下半叶后的400多年里，台湾前后有16次遭到日、美、英、法、荷、西班牙诸国的霸占和侵略，其中两次沦为外国殖民地：第一次从1624年至1662年沦为荷兰殖民地达38年；第二次自1895年至1945年沦为日本殖民地50年。纵观台湾的近代史，其所受外国侵略之多，规模之大、时间之长、罹难之惨，在中国的其他各省、自治区中是找不到先例的。因此，作为一种思潮根源来看，当时的台湾人民有一部分人在相当长的时间里仍以大明人自居，视清廷为外来政权。
